New Additions to 'The Collection'

In recent auctions 'The Collection' has managed to buy a three very nice covers - they haven't arrived yet but I'm waiting with anticipation. All early Chalon covers, the first one is a very rare 1/- Green London Print SG 3 on cover as shown below. This is the first cover with this stamp on it for 'The Collection' so very exciting. The cover is ex The Joseph Hackmey Collection and was lot #2051 in the second auction at Spink on 20 May 2010. It was sent from New Plymouth to London on 5 December 1857 and is a great example.

The second cover is a multiple SG 5 2d Blue on blue paper. I'm not 100% on the provenance of this cover so if anyone has seen it in previous auctions let me know. I like the redirection aspect and any multiple early chalons on cover are very nice to behold.

The third cover is very interesting indeed. A pair of SG 4 singles and a 2d Pale Blue SG 9. 4d rate but the stamps themselves tell a tale or two. It can be seen that the 1d were a pair but have been separated before being affixed. The rough separation seems to have been done by hand hence the ripping and uneven result, and then one is stuck upside down next to the other! You can see the rip is same on both stamps - if you rotate the right hand stamp 180 degrees it fits against the second stamp. And then a 2d had been added. If only the cover could talk - none-the-less a great cover. Hard to find 1d Red on blue paper on cover little alone two singles.

If anyone else has another theory be good to hear it!

Cheers,

Neil
